Really? If they're from India, they don't want to be called Indian?

"Where were you born?"
"Vancouver."
"Oh, you're Canadian."
"I prefer to be called Northwest American, actually."
Said no Canadian ever.

The Indian guys I know don't mind being called Indians or brown guys. It's totally fine to call them that.

They are from India. It's not derogatory. South Asian? Why? I wouldn't call a French guy Western European.

I'm guessing Tony is referring to when you don't actually know if they're from India, Pakistan, Bangledesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, etc. Like when you're talking about somebody that's not present, and not known to the party you're speaking to.

My British co-workers think of "Asian" as usually Indian people, whereas we think of "Asians" typically as Chinese.

Very fair questions.

Everyone’s experience is different, so all anyone can try to do is listen to them and try to be respectful. If that’s their goal.

When it’s not the goal you end up with situations like Indigenous people here being called Indian for a couple hundred years. Nobody asked them what they call themselves - they were just labelled incorrectly and nobody cared enough about them to change it.

Calling us or them or everyone brownies is kinda derogatory though eh? Try calling a group of black people Blackies, they’re not gunna be cool with it.

So, to the point about derogatory with the term Indian - I don’t think people today use the term Indian that way. I like it in fact ... like you say, why not call someone from India an Indian?

Well, some of it is history. In BC for example, since that’s who we’re talking about, people labeled “Hindu” weren’t allowed to vote until the 20s in Vancouver. People labelled “Indian” had their children stolen, were killed, raped, imprisoned, had their culture whitewashed and weren’t allowed to vote until the 60s.

And that label of Indian meant you were only allowed on certain land, and wasn’t a term used with respect in the least. It was legally a way of marking someone as inferior. Many indigenous people took the word and have reclaimed it and own it. I have a friend who’s family had their name taken away and replaced by “Indian” for generations by white people. That legally is their name. That’s how I got the last name Roy ... by having my family name taken away by Brits in India.

So, now, legally and culturally it’s now always clear when someone says an Indian person who they are referring to. I think as we grow up we’ll be end up using Indian to refer to people from India ... but right now I think many people of South Asian cultures prefer that term as it’s more precise. It lumps together many cultures too though. It’s not perfect.

It just has to do with respect. If I call myself a brown person, I’m not doing it to disrespect myself ... I’m doing it to use a term that easily describes a shared identity I have with many other people who share my skin colour. It’s “us”

If it’s done to segregate people by race in a derogatory way, then it’s calling us “them” ... like somehow it’s inferior. Then that’s not cool. But I think generally it’s an acceptable turn of phrase. Depends on it’s use. It’s not the most respectful or the most derogatory.

Yep. And also, many of us identify as Canadian regardless of where our grandparents came from and regardless of the colour of our skin. Indo-Canadian works well and is respectful too.

I’d be lying if I said I read that novel. But no one calls brown people ‘south asians’.

Me explaining what happened to people of colour and indigenous people isn’t gross. Its kind. There’s a difference.

Indians dont care that you call them brown or indian.

You’re lost wasn’t there yet. My comment was to Blake about woman being sexually harassed by compliments.

I haven’t read your report yet.

Yeah, it doesn’t really bother me either. It’s simple and most people know what you’re talking about.

I think the question was what do they/we prefer. Or what to use when being respectful instead of sounding derogatory or dismissive ... Which is more complicated.
